Creating inclusive research environments is an ongoing process, and putting equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDI-A) principles into practice can raise challenging questions about accessibility, communication, patient partnership, representation, and meaningful engagement.

In this webinar, our presenters Keila Turino Miranda and Javiera Navarrete will explore some of the common challenges that can arise when applying EDI-A principles in patient-oriented research. Drawing on their complementary perspectives as a researcher and patient partner, they will share lessons learned, practical strategies, and opportunities for research teams to strengthen inclusive practices throughout the research process.

The session draws on lessons from Can-SOLVE CKD’s network-wide EDI-A reflection process and A Practical Guide to Inclusive Research, translating these learnings into practical considerations that research teams can apply in their own work.

A Practical Guide to Inclusive Research

Developed by the Can-SOLVE CKD Network IDEA Advisory Committee, A Practical Guide to Inclusive Research brings together 10 practical “How-to” checklists to support the implementation of EDI-A principles in research.

The guide grew out of a network-wide EDI-A audit involving patient partners, researchers, and staff, which identified opportunities to strengthen EDI-A practices across the network. The resulting checklists provide practical guidance on accessibility, communication, cultural safety, knowledge sharing, diverse representation, patient partnership, relationship building, and other aspects of inclusive research.

In addition to an introduction to the resource, the session will provide an opportunity to explore how the lessons and tools from the Guide can actually be applied in research practice. Participants will leave with practical ideas and tools they can use to reflect on and strengthen EDI-A practices within their own research teams and projects.

Presenters

Keila Turino Miranda – Researcher

Keila Turino Miranda is a researcher with experience in equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDI-A) and sex and gender research, with a particular interest in barriers affecting transgender health. She led Can-SOLVE CKD’s network-wide EDI-A audit, examining existing practices, identifying opportunities for improvement, and helping inform the development of practical tools to support more inclusive research. Her academic research has also focused on the validation of glomerular filtration rate estimation equations in transgender individuals receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy.

Javiera Navarrete – Patient Partner

Javiera Navarrete is a patient partner with the Can-SOLVE CKD Network, where she is a member of the Patient Governance Council and EDI-A Committee. Drawing on her lived experience with polycystic kidney disease (PKD), she brings a patient perspective to research and advocates for the meaningful inclusion of people affected by kidney disease. Javiera also has a background in research, having completed a Master of Science in Pharmacy at the University of Alberta and pursued studies in Public Health. Her involvement with Can-SOLVE CKD has allowed her to combine her lived and research experience to help strengthen patient-oriented research.
