Happy Holidays from the Can-SOLVE CKD Network

On behalf of Can-SOLVE CKD Network, we would like to thank you—our network members, colleagues, and partners—for your support this year. Our offices will be closed from December 23, 2024 to January 1, 2025 as we take a short break for the holidays. We wish you a safe and happy holiday season and look forward to connecting with you in the new year!

Cultural Competency Connections: Reflections from Kidney Check Nurse Christian Allera

When Christian Allera joined Can-SOLVE CKD Network as the BC Kidney Check lead nurse in August 2024, one of the ways he prepared for his new role was by doing cultural competency training from the Learning Pathway, an eight-step training pathway focused on supporting respectful engagement with Indigenous peoples.

For researchers and health care providers working closely with Indigenous people, which includes Can-SOLVE CKD’s Kidney Check program, this type of training is especially important.

We recently connected with Allera to hear his initial reflections on his cultural competency training and how he hopes to apply it to his work in First Nations communities with Kidney Check.

Can-SOLVE CKD announces a new Indigenous Initiatives Manager

Jocelyn Jones joined the Can-SOLVE CKD Network in 2022 in the role of coordinator for the Indigenous Peoples’ Engagement and Research Council (IPERC). Over the past two years, she has fully embraced her work with the council and become an integral part of both Can-SOLVE CKD’s Operations Team and the Indigenous Initiatives Team.

In November, Jocelyn was promoted to the role of Indigenous Initiatives Manager. Learn more about her new role.

Farewell and Kinanáskomitin to our dear colleague, Craig Settee

It is with mixed emotions that we announce the departure of our esteemed colleague, Craig Settee, as he embarks on a new chapter at the First Nations Health Authority.

Craig has been with the Can-SOLVE CKD Network for the past seven years, starting as a patient partner (a living kidney donor to his brother Kevin), and going on to become the Indigenous Peoples’ Engagement and Research Council (IPERC) Coordinator. In 2022, he inaugurated the role of Cultural Competency Manager at the network.
