Finding healing after a difficult diagnosis: Maureena’s story
After being diagnosed with kidney disease, Maureena Loth found healing through community, Indigenous knowledge, and patient partnership. Now a member of the Indigenous Peoples’ Engagement and Research Council, she advocates for kidney screening and culturally safe care. Read how her lived experience led her to get involved in Can-SOLVE CKD and shape research from within.
Advancing cultural safety in kidney care: a closing keynote
The Canadian Association of Nephrology Nurses and Technologists (CANNT) is hosting its 2025 National Conference in Victoria, BC, from October 16-18, focused on the theme “Leading the Future of Kidney Care: Inclusive. Sustainable. Accessible.”
On October 18, Indigenous Initiatives Team members Catherine Turner and Amanda Green will present “Advancing Cultural Safety in Kidney Care.” This session describes our collaborative approach — including the Indigenous Peoples’ Engagement and Research Council and the BC Kidney Check program — and shows how community-led evaluation and culturally safe practice translate into improved care pathways. If you’re at the conference, make sure to visit the Can-SOLVE CKD booth and say hello!
Manuscript series highlights Can-SOLVE CKD research
Can-SOLVE CKD has launched a new manuscript series in The Canadian Journal of Kidney Health and Disease. Building on our introductory paper, “The Problems We Can-SOLVE”, this series continues our shift from discovery to implementation — embedding equity, Indigenous engagement, patient partnership, and implementation science. Our latest paper highlights the Self-Management team’s collaborative work with patients and Indigenous partners to adapt the self-management digital tool, My Kidneys My Health, and make it more culturally responsive.
