Dialysis costs in Canada average nearly $100,000 per patient per year, but there has been little research into the cost of care for those with chronic kidney disease who are not on dialysis. A new study in the Canadian Journal of Kidney Health and Disease finds non-dialysis CKD care averages more than $14,000 per year, translating to a total cost of $32 billion per year to provide care to all Canadians with CKD. These findings will help inform future cost estimates of CKD in Canada, including potential savings that might result from interventions that slow or prevent kidney disease.

The study was led by Calgary-based Can-SOLVE CKD investigators Dr. Braden Manns, Dr. Brenda Hemmelgarn, and Dr. Marcello Tonelli.
