Project Overview

Transplantation offers kidney patients longer life and renewed quality of life, all at a fraction of the cost of dialysis. Unfortunately, there are too few deceased donors to meet the demand for transplantable kidneys. A transplanted kidney from a living donor offers many advantages, including superior graft and patient survival, shorter wait times, and lower health care costs. However, Canada’s rate of living kidney donation has stagnated since 2006 and is 35% lower than several Western nations.

This project will develop solutions to help overcome barriers to living kidney donor transplantation. It will also evaluate the impact of these solutions on patient experiences, outcomes and health care system costs. Informed by our patient partners, we initially will focus on two priority areas. The first priority is to improve the quality and efficiency of the donor candidate evaluation process throughout Canada. We will measure current processes in thousands of Canadian donor candidates, develop national consensus on the goals of an efficient evaluation process, and develop and test solutions to realize these goals (e.g. patient-peer navigators, centre-level confidential performance reports, streamlined testing). The second priority is to evaluate provincial solutions to support patients with kidney failure in their pursuit of living kidney donation. These solutions include administrative support to programs and providers, a patient-centred approach to transplant education and choice, and peer mentorship.
