Our biweekly update keeps you informed on our network projects and initiatives! Below are a few highlights. Make sure to check out the latest issue below.

Recognizing World Kidney Day

This year’s theme, “advancing equitable access to care and optimal medication practice,” calls attention to the barriers preventing patients from accessing the care they need. From lack of awareness and specialists to high treatment costs, there are a myriad of obstacles that contribute to the inequities in kidney care.

But there is cause for hope. At the Can-SOLVE CKD Network, our research program is focused on what matters most to people living with and affected by kidney disease. Each of our projects is based on priorities identified by patients, donors, and care partners. People with lived experience are integrated into everything we do, not just as research subjects, but as true partners.

Cultural Competency Connections

Tánsi*, Aniin*, Greetings! Welcome to Cultural Competency Connections, a new feature in which we will share information, learning opportunities and experiences related to cultural competency, safety and humility. The Can-SOLVE CKD Network works to advance cultural competency in kidney research and this commentary will aim to strengthen connections and hold space for creating dialogues and deeper learning.

This space will include a mix of perspectives, experiences and reflections from Indigenous and non-Indigenous network members and partners. Be on the lookout here for opportunities to learn from upcoming webinars, workshops, and training. We encourage folks to visit the cultural competency resources on our website.

Thank you Joanne Kappel for your dedicated work!

Our nephrologists have worked hard for many years to better the lives and care of people affected by kidney disease. We are pleased to announce that Joanne Kappel, a researcher and nephrologist with the University of Saskatchewan, will be entering a well-deserved retirement this winter.

Dr. Kappel was a principal investigator on Can-SOLVE CKD’s “Improving Indigenous Patient Knowledge About Treatment Options” research project from phase one. Her dedication to engaging with Indigenous communities led to her being honoured with the Howard Vincent Award in 2021. The award honours a non-Indigenous individual who has demonstrated commitment to furthering Reconciliation with Indigenous peoples within the Can-SOLVE CKD Network or who has inspired others to continue Reconciliation efforts. Dr. Kappel’s contributions to the network have been significant and are deeply appreciated. Warmest wishes and happy retirement, Dr. Kappel!
